Working
for Peace
Working to Close
the School of Americas
The
Sisters of the Presentation have
had a long standing history
of
supporting the School of Americas
Watch which
is a nonviolent grassroots
movement that works to stand in
solidarity
with the people of Latin America, to close the SOA/WHINSEC and to
change oppressive U.S. foreign policy
that the SOA represents.
Working to End the War in Iraq
In 2003, the President of the Dubuque Sisters of the Presentation, in
conjunction with
10 other congregational leaders of women religious
in the Dubuque and the surrounding
area, made a public statement, A
Call for Nonviolence, decrying the invasion of Iraq.
War dehumanizes
and diminishes all of the human community and devastates Earth.
The
ongoing war in Iraq is taking an immense toll on human life, not only
of young men
and women in the military but also the lives of innocent
civilians of all ages. This war
has caused untold damage to the land
and to the infrastructures of Iraq. We also have
grave concerns about
the alienation and diminishment of the moral and political
leadership
of the United States in the world community.
Working to Uphold a Peace Presence
Since 2003, a small band of sisters have committed themselves to becoming
a public
presence for peace. These sisters represent all of us as we
commit ourselves to a
prayerful (reflective), spiritual approach and
to peace and nonviolence in our war torn
world. Every Tuesday, weather
permitting, these sisters stand on a busy street corner
witnessing
to peace. When the weather is too harsh, they pray for peace in the
convent chapel. As a community we commit ourselves to the prophetic
call to stand
for peace.
