Associate and Co-Director of Associates, Karla Berns received the Alumni of Distinction Award given by Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque. This award, given each year, recognizes an alum who has contributed to the nursing profession, in particular, and to the world as a whole. Karla was nominated by one of her former students from Mercy who later worked with her as a faculty member and nursing administrator at Northeast Iowa Community College. Karla was presented with a beautiful engraved clock.
Sister Cheryl Demmer, principal at Bishop Hayes Catholic School in Muscatine, IA, and Sister Irma Ries, executive director of Muscatine Center for Social Action were invited to the state capitol for two special events on Holy Thursday.

Sister Cheryl, who was asked to be “Pastor for the Day,” presented the opening prayer for both the Senate and the House of the Iowa Legislature. Following the prayer, Sister Cheryl joined Sister Irma, who was being recognized for her outstanding commitment to improving the health of the community by the Iowa Medical Society Alliance and the Iowa Department of Public Health as a finalist in the Spirit of Hermina Award. The Spirit of Hermina Award recognizes individuals who promote good health practices and impact the health of a significant number of Iowans.
On August 15, 2007, Sister Carla Popes will assume the responsibilities of the community’s director of vocations. Sister served as the director of lay formation ministry for the Archdiocese of Dubuque for 19 years. As vocation director, she will follow in the footsteps of Sister Carmen Hernandez, who is studying Spanish in Cochabamba, Bolivia.
