“Inspired by the light of Nano Nagle, guided by the light of Christ,” this was the theme chosen by Sister Jessi Beck for her reception into the novitiate on August 12, 2006. She carried the lantern in procession as the words of songwriter Liam Lawton were sung, “Who will light the lantern and keep it burning bright?”
This young woman from rural Iowa feels a connection with the simple woman, Nano Nagle, and her deep desire to work with the poor. Quotations from the letters of Nano were intertwined within the scripture from John 8:12-14.
Jessi’s admiration of the strength of Mother Vincent and the young women who left family and friends in Ireland to begin a new Dubuque foundation, taps into her own feelings of letting go to face the fears of the unknown.
“I believe that with her courage to continue the quest for God and our sharing of this lifestyle with her, Jessi will continue to help lead us to new places.” says Sister Julie Marsh, formation director.
From the words of songwriter Kathy Sherman, CSJ, sisters and associates proclaimed to the heavens the passion that we all possess, “…we are who we are and we do what we do, because we love God.”
As a canonical novice this year, Sister Jessi is involved in the Inter-Community Novitiate at Techny, IL, as well as taking classes in prayer, religious life and scripture. She will also be participating in various mission experiences around the area throughout the year to broaden her awareness to the needs of God’s people and the care of the earth.
