Confronting Injustice

Confronting the Death Penalty
Sisters of the Presentation maintain that
abolition of the death penalty would promote
values that are important to us as citizens and as Catholics. First, abolition sends a

message that we can break the cycle of violence, that we need not take life for life,
that we can envisage more humane and more hopeful and effective responses to the
growth of violent crime. We believe that
abolition of the death penalty is most
consonant with the example of Jesus,
who both taught and practiced the forgiveness
of injustice and who came "to give his life as a ransom for many." (Mark 10:45) Because
of our beliefs we participate in the For Whom the Bells program and have joined with
other Presentation communities across North American to make a public Statement in
Opposition To The Death Penalty
.

Confronting Corporate Greed
Socially Responsible Investing utilizes our voice as investors to leverage a call for
socially responsible corporate policies and practices. As owners of the corporation,
shareholders can influence the behavior of a company in which stock is held. The
Investment Policy of the Sisters of the Presentation includes monitoring our stock
portfolio in relation to social and environmental issues, a commitment to shareholder
activity, and to voting proxy forms. Using our Congregational Guidelines for Socially
Responsible Investments
, we have networked with others and have filed resolutions
and or have been in dialogue with corporate management over social and environmental
issues. We are also proud investors in Partners for the Common Good, a community
development loan fund that serves nonprofit organizations in the United States and
abroad.

Confronting the Death Culture
The Sisters of the Presentation believe that each human being, without discrimination,
merits respect. At the very least, respecting human life excludes the deliberate and
direct destruction of life. We defend human life over the entire course of life, from
conception to natural death. Therefore, we oppose Abortion and Euthanasia.
