Immersion Trip to the SOA
Where:
Fort Benning, GA
When: November
17-20,
2006
Thousands will gather at the gates
of Ft. Benning, Georgia for the Vigil to Close the “School of the Americas.” The US Army School of
the Americas (known by the acronyms SOA and WHINSEC) was a training center
for Latin American military personnel that turned out more than 61,000 “graduates” in
its 54-year history. As we learned that SOA graduates organized the assassination
of Archbishop Romero, the Jesuit massacre, the El Mozote Massacre in which
801 people were killed in one day, and countless other atrocities, a grassroots
movement mobilized to close the school.
This June the House of Representatives, possibly our most conservative
in history, voted and almost decided to suspend funding to and investigate
this school, failing to pass the measure by the barest minimum of votes.
Continuing the momentum to pass the measure, our trip will sponsor people
to vigil and rally at the gates of the school.
